Joel MacRae
President

Joel MacRae is a resident of Sydney with experience in Financial Advising. Joel is a recent graduate of Cape Breton University’s Business Administration Program and holds a concentration in Marketing.

Networking, fellowship, and professional development opportunities attracted Joel to JCI Cape Breton, and with a desire to become more involved he has taken on the position of Chair of Business Initiatives for JCI Cape Breton for 2009 and Chair of the Board in 2010 before being elected as President of the board for 2011.

Joel sees a membership in JCI Cape Breton as an excellent way to keep a finger on the pulse of the local business sector.

Mark Sparrow
Chair

Mark Sparrow, Chair of JCI Cape Breton, and Business Development Officer in Cape Breton for the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council, is a graduate of Cape Breton University's BBA program and holds a concentration in Marketing. Mark is passionate about contributing to making Cape Breton Island a better place to not just live and work, but to thrive in. In recent years Mark has worked with a number of key business and economic development organizations such as Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation, Cape Breton County Economic Development Authority, Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design, Coastal Business CBDC, and the NS Association of CBDCs.

Mark also contributes to the Cape Breton community an avid volunteer. He is a proud supporter and volunteer of Junior Achievement Nova Scotia, the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Canada, Big Brothers Big Sisters, as well as the NextGen project of the Cape Breton Partnership. Mark has served as President of the Board of JCI Cape Breton for 2010, Executive Vice President for 2009, and Chair of Membership Initiatives for 2008.

In 2007 Mark was awarded a JCI Cape Breton HYPE award for "Excellence in Individual Development" for his efforts to help others achieve their potential, and was recognized by JCI Canada as the "Most Outstanding JCI Canada Chapter President" in 2010.

Wayne Banfield
Chair of Membership Initiatives

Wayne Banfield is the Director, Business Development for Freedom 55 Financial in Cape Breton. With almost 9 years in the financial services industry, Wayne’s primary focus as Director for Freedom 55 Financial is to recruit and coach new and senior financial advisors in the financial services industry.

Prior to taking a role in management, Wayne spent 7 years as a financial advisor where he grew a successful practice helping clients create and manage wealth. Along with his passion for financial services, Wayne has joined various organizations such as JCI Cape Breton and the Sydney Chamber of Commerce to contribute to the development of the local business community.

Lucy Wintermans
Executive Vice President

Lucy began her dance training at age 3 and has traveled the world dancing both competitively and to further her dance education. She is a certified dance instructor through the ballet division of the Canadian Dance Teachers Association and has been operating her own school (Lucy Wintermans School of Dance) since 2002. In 2008 the school expanded to become the East Side Arts Academy and now offers classes in music, drama, visual arts, and of course - dance which is now taught in both Sydney and Glace Bay. Lucy is an award winning choreographer and enjoys new challenges and experiences. She has been the choreographer and production manager for many pageants, stage productions, fashion shows, and is consistently asked to judge and speak at major events and competitions. Lucy is active in the business community and is excited to sit on the board of JCI Cape Breton as Committee Chair of Advocacy & Relations.

Lucy is a member of Dance Nova Scotia, SOCAN, and the Canadian Dance Alliance. She is also the proud mother of twins - Ella and Adrianna Wintermans.

Jill McPherson
Internal Vice President

Jill McPherson recently graduated from Cape Breton University where she obtained an Honors Degree in Anthropology/Sociology as well as a Certificate in Public Administration specializing in International Relations. Throughout her stay at Cape Breton University, Jill was highly involved with the Students’ Union as VP Academic, Coordinator of Campus Affairs, and Student Representative Council Chair. She was also highly active in student life, volunteering her time with such campaigns as Operation Red Nose, Shinerama and Love Africa. In 2007, Jill was appointed to the CBU Senate and continued to serve on a number of institutional committees. This earned her the Elmer Britten Memorial Award for Outstanding Dedication to University Life in early 2009.

At this time, Cape Breton University provided a foundation for Jill’s interest and passion in social justice to grow and develop as evidenced by her membership in CBU Center for International Studies, the Canadian Association for the Study of International Development, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and Amnesty International Canada. Jill also co-founded the CBU Save the Children Society in 2007 was appointed to the Save the Children Canada Board of Directors later that year.

Jill’s attention to issues of international development fueled her interest in creating growth and opportunity locally. Born and raised in Port Morien, an energetic and vibrant community but one also affected by out-migration, Jill joined JCI Cape Breton in 2009, serving as secretary and Executive Vice-President, in an effort to build an environment where young professionals can thrive and develop. Jill’s dedication to JCI’s mission and vision earned her the JCI Chapter Award for Outstanding Contribution in 2009.

Having just returned from a 6-month stay in Kenya where she worked as a program evaluator for Save the Children Canada, Jill is delighted to put her practical skills to the test as Internal Vice-President in which she plans to incorporate issues of social justice and environmental sustainability into many of JCI’s events, activities and trainings over the upcoming year.

Philip Campbell
Treasurer

Philip Campbell is a fifth year student at Cape Breton University. A graduate of the Bachelor or Business Administration Class of 2010, he has returned to upgrade and complete the Major in Accounting.

Along with his studies, he is employed with CBU Students’ Union as Vice President of Finance & Operations. This role has allowed him to represent students on the CBU Board of Governors and CBU Senate and sub-committees, and the Alliance of Nova Scotia Student Associations (ANSSA). Having been employed with the Students’ Union for the past three years, Philip has served other roles including Administrative Support, Job Navigation Coordinator, Treasurer to the Business Society, and Chair of Entrepreneurship Week 2009. Philip has also volunteered in the Students’ Union Operation Red Nose and Shinerama initiatives. Previous work experience at CBU includes Accounting Support for the Small Business Development Centre, CBU Press Inc., and a TA for Computers in Business.

For his endeavours in keeping JCI Cape Breton tied to the CBU community, Philip was awarded a 2010 JCI HYPE! Award for Executive Member of the Year.

A native of Dominion, currently living in Sydney, Philip understands the importance of youth retention coupled with attracting outside talent for the growth of the local community and economy. Philip was initially attracted to JCI Cape Breton for their efforts in these areas.

In 2009, Philip became involved in the planning of the annual JCI HYPE! Awards. In 2010, Philip was elected to the Board as Secretary, and has recently been elected to the Treasurer position for 2011.

Tyler Dilney
Chair of Advocacy & Relations

Tyler Dilney, a recent graduate from Cape Breton University’s Business Administration program with concentrations in Finance and Economics.
Tyler is returning for the current academic year to attain a major in Accounting with plans to attain an accounting designation.
At the age of 16 Tyler joined the Canadian Forces Reserves and is still currently involved with the Canadian Forces. The forces offered an amazing skill building experience and opportunity to meet many new people.
During the summer of his third year of studies at CBU Tyler wanted to put his entrepreneurial skills to the test. To do this Tyler opened Proguard Asphalt Sealing and Property Maintenance. The summer venture turned out to be a great overall experience and introduced him to the business world at another level. Tyler is enthusiastic about the local business community in Cape Breton and wants to make a positive change by creating worthwhile opportunities for youth and current business owners.

Scott Purdie
Chair of Individual Development

Scott Purdie is a Counsellor with Credit Counselling Services of Atlantic Canada (CCSAC). Scott joined the CCSAC team in February, 2010 and works out of their Sydney satellite office. Scott became a member of JCI Cape Breton in October, 2010 and became involved with the Board as Chair of Individual Development. Scott graduated from Nova Scotia Community College – Halifax Campus in 2004 with an Advanced Diploma in Public Relations. Scott also received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Cape Breton University in 2002 along with an Accounting diploma from CBU in 2001.

Scott’s previous background also includes marketing, communications, as well as broadcasting with various commercial and community radio stations including CHER in Sydney; Q104 and C100 in Halifax; Seaside FM, Eastern Passage, and The Coast 89.7, Glace Bay.

Scott joined JCI Cape Breton primarily for the networking and social opportunities. Scott has volunteered his time in past initiatives including the 2000 Esso Women’s National Hockey Tournament, 2003 IIHF World Junior Hockey Tournament, the 2004 IIHF World Women’s Hockey Tournament, as well as the Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia, and the Cape Breton Chapter of the Nova Scotia Kidney Foundation. Scott continues to assist The Coast 89.7 on a volunteer basis helping out with promotions as well as on-air.

Scott is currently enrolled in the Accredited Financial Counsellor (AFC) course and plans to obtain the AFC designation by 2012.
